Greetings From
The Otium
It's Harvest Time In
The Third Act
The harmless ramblings of one man's unfettered id may provide droll amusement and respite from the negotium.

The Otium — an abstract term for productive, reflective free time, the opposite of negotium, or worldly duties. In my case, it’s a time of life for dignified self-improvement through reading, writing, creating visual art, and even a bit of music.
Why this web site? Echoing around the emptiness of my so-called mind are a few confabulated memories and imagined stories that I find amusing, and so might you. Some of them are attached to photographs or images, and I use those to caulk the leaks in my basket of lies. One might presume that I sound self-deprecating or disingenuous, but I scarcely believe anyone's assertions these days, least of all some rando's webpage, so how could I exclude my own? Eye-witness accounts are notoriously unreliable, and my explorations of consciousness have continuously revealed veils of illusion, so let's just agree that we're all floating in an autopoietic narrative that often, not always, but somehow, gets the job done.
This preamble is a throat-clearing preview of what you might expect on my website, along with some videos and some pictures. I suppose that I could sharpen up my focus and deliver a cleaner presentation, but for the time being it's the online version of my sketchbook journals, of which I have a lifetime's collection.
UNSOLICITED TESTIMONIALS

Words do not exist to express the breadth and depth of my admiration for Dirk. It's not so much his breathtaking lack of accomplishment, but his mere existence. I simply cannot find a way to express my admiration.

Sorry, doesn't ring a bell And believe me, I woulda remembered if he did.
SIGNIFICANT MOMENTS
Selected For The Lead Role In My Own Birth
After a pleasant gestation period, I made my debut appearance in the pilot episode of the long-running series "Dirk Brandts" which has fortunately been picked up for yet another season.
Peripatetic Childhood
My parents were teachers who enjoyed working abroad, so we lived in Spain, Kenya, Mexico, and parts of the USA. Santa Barbara, California was home base. I graduated from SB High School.
Young Adulthood
I worked two consecutive summer seasons at McMurdo, Antarctica to earn money to surf through the South Pacific. I worked on film crews in Europe and Hollywood, and got married in Vienna, Austria. I also earned a college degree in Art Studio from UC Santa Cruz and UC Santa Barbara.
The Middle Years
I completed a long stint as a scientific illustrator at UC Santa Barbara. I re-married, bought a home, and started a family. I turned to more film production and art projects. Today everyone is healthy and happy, and it's all systems GO.
